A EuroSUPA 3 Stars Long distance Race, September 25th 2011
Report by Hans Schouten :
It turned out to be a beautiful, warm and sunny day on the 25th of september after a summer with lots of rain and wind. Many sup events were cancelled or postponed due to the weather, but the last race of the season in the new Amsterdam quarter IJburg was lucky. Sunny, 20 degrees and a slight southern breeze. 34 paddlers gathered for
the Rondje IJburg, a 12.5 km EurosupA race organized by M&M sup, WV IJburg and Supfrenzy. Together with 10 paddlers for the 7 km funrace, accompanied by several windsurfers and canoers, the waters around IJburg were soon to be filled with sports enthousiasts.
The racecourse was a clockwise course around the islands of IJburg, under several bridges, along houses and roads, followed by a last long stretch over the open water of the Markermeer back, after rounding the last isle, to the finish.
The 34 paddlers started in front of a cape on the IJburg beach. In between the male contestants were many top dutch paddlers who also competed in the 11 city tour, such as Martijn van Deth, Joost Wildenberg, Dennis van der Panne and Ed Reichman as well as French paddler Frederic Bonnef and the German Frederik Schick. The
ladies competition had also several 11 city paddlers such as Morene Dekker, Linda Dobbelsteen and Nienke Duinmeijer.
Straight after the start, the pack paddled fast towards the first island. After rounding, heading in slight headwinds, the first separation was already clear. The top racers had created a gap between them and the rest of the contestants. Martijn van Deth lead by several meters, followed by Dennis van der Panne and Frederic Bonnef. The next group of 3 followed within 15 meters. Morene Dekker and Olivia Piana followed within 150 meters. Olivia took of faster than Morene at the start, but she had already caught up before the 3 km mark.
After the 6 km stretch through the canals and under several bridges, Martijn van Deth enlarged his lead. Behind him, a group of 4, with Ricardo Haverschmidt, Joost Duivenvoorde and Dennis van der Panne on 14 ft boards and Frederic Bonnef on a 12’6 were chasing him like a snake chasing a mouse. In the ladies division, Morene kept on
paddling fast, creating a large gap between her and her fellow competitors, with Olivia in 2nd and Nienke Duinmeijer in 3rd place.
At 11 km, with the finish in sight, Martijn van Deth started passing the final island, with the group of 4 at approximately 100 meters, but instead of aiming for the finishline, Martijn continued to paddle in a straight line, while the group of 4 tightly passed the island catching up with Martijn who was unaware of his error. Luckily Martijn was notified by a jetski-driver and quickly turned in the correct direction. The group of 4 was paddling
hard for the finishline. Martijn caught up with them in 4th position. Ricardo Haverschmidt was leading the group, but, with 50 meters to go, he dropped off his board, giving Joost Duivenvoorde free sight of the finishline. Even though he swiftly climbed on his board, Ricardo could not prevent Joost from passing the finishline as the winner of the IJburg Race. Frederic Bonnef finished 3rd, smartly securing his 1st position in the 12’6 class.
Martijn came in 3rd with Dennis van der Panne within a few meters.
In the 12’6 division, Frederic Bonnef was followed by Dick van der Spek and Dinant Roode. The small Unlimited division race was won by Patrick Smits on a K15, finishing in front of barry Douma, also on a K15 and Erik bruining on Anne-Marie Reichman’s 2010 11 city board. The ladies 12’6 race was easily won by Morene Dekker, with Olivia Piana 7 minutes behind. Nienke Duinmeijer finished 3rd, again with a gap of 7 minutes. Ilse Leegwater was the only and therefore winning contestant in the ladies UNL class.
After everyone finished, a relay was held. 4 teams were competing against each other over a course of approximately 400 meters. Starting at the beach, running, paddling close to the shore, rounding 2 buoys and paddling back with again some running in the water and on land proved to be very spectacular for the spectators and contestants.
After 3 rounds, the Supersup team of Dinant Roode, Hans Schouten, Haaije van Zwol and Erik Bruining was in the lead, but in the final round, the Hobie-Kialoa team with Roel van Noord, Dick van der Spek, Joost Wildenberg and Mike Hessels caught up.
Powerman Joost won the relay for the Hobie team with only 1 meter difference after a 50 meter run on the beach towards the finishline.
The award ceremony was presented by Miriam and Morene of M&M sup together with the main sponsor of the event, Eisenman en Ravenstein Lawyers and race director Hans Schouten. Trophies for the winner and medals for silver and bronze were awarded and the winners of the relay were awarded with billabong caps.
After dinner and a beer, everyone packed their boards and left the sunny city-beach of IJburg after a great day of paddling
