And as we are talking about events, here is a good news : There will be a EuroSUPA SUP Surfing event this year.
This European SUP Surfing contest will take place in Somo, North of Spain thanks to the “Federación Cantabra de Surf” October 19-20 2013 (save the dates)
It will enter the 2013 Calendar as a “Special Event” , The goal of this event will to set the standard for future European SUP Surfing events. Most of the focus will be on providing serious judging and serious competition.
Judges working during the contest are all familiar with SUP and have a strong background of pro surfing contests, national and international (ISA, ASP etc..)
We will keep you updated with this event.

For now, the next events are May 18-19 in France with a 1 Star Beach Race at the North Point SUP Classic and on the same week end in Holland the Battle of the Coast with also a 1 Star Beach Race.

End of May will be super hot with the SUP Race CUP 25-26 May, 4 Stars Beach Race and 3 Stars Long Distance Elite 12’6 (tbc) as well as open races and a Bic One Design Race.
Following this huge event, the Lost Mills in Germany May 27- June 2nd with a 6 Stars Long Distance Elite 14′ will be another highlight.
Not only the best European SUP Racers will be at those event, but many top international racers are organizing there trip from overseas to take part in the biggest European Events of the year.

We also have great news from Italy with 2 new events in our calendar :
July 6-7 2013 SUP Cup Beach Race, with a 3 Stars Beach Race in San Cataldo and August 23-25  2013 : Surf’s Up , a 4 Stars Beach Race in Monopoli.
So there will be a lot of action this summer in Italy (don’t forget the Italia Surf Expo July 26-28 2013)

The South of Brittany (France, West coast) was the theater of this 3-star EuroSUPA event. Forty-six paddlers participated in the Long Distance Race.

The course of this Elite Race (12’6) was delimited by the edge of the coast. The paddlers had to find the best way according to the wind and the waves.The orientation of the three first kilometers was upstream and upwind (light wind at this moment, a few knots), so most of the paddlers chose the option of staying very close to the cliff, taking advantage of some shelter. There was no danger for the paddlers, the ocean was rather calm, but they had to stay careful for their fins.

After turning around the Pointe Saint-Gildas (the farthest western point of the course), the conditions changed as well for the stream (from there it was downstream) as for the wind (more or less downwind). The wind strenghtened gradually, following perfectly the weather forecast, and in the last part of the course the racers benefited from both downwind and small well-oriented bumps.

Two racers took the lead very soon, Eric Terrien and Gaétan Séné. The gap between them and a group of five racers increased gradually, reaching about four minutes on the finish line. Regarding Gaétan and Eric, each one led according to the choice of his way among bumps, and also to a few falls. The last kilometer was decisive, the two paddlers accelerated and Eric finished first, twenty-four seconds before Gaétan. Four minutes later, Sébastien Gramont won the third place on the podium.
Martin Letourneur was the first junior, with his eighth place in the Elite ranking. Thomas Hébert was the second junior and Martin Vitry took the third place in this ranking.

Cécile Gondre was the fastest lady in this race, five minutes before Anne Crozet and ten minutes before Karine Dormet.

The Jade Paddle Race event consisted of three races, and the total of participants (at least in one race) amounted to about seventy.

The Saturday morning was dedicated to a beach race.

In the afternoon there was another important event, the first stage of the BIC SUP One Design 2013. Heats of twelve racers were organised, with quarter of final, semi-final and final. The juniors and the ladies had directly their finals. The racers appreciated these short sprints, taking a lot of fun while competing for the win !

April 20th-21st, the Jade Paddle Race is taking place at “La Plaine Sur Mer”, on the Atlantic coast of France. And April 27-28, the best European paddlers will head to beautiful Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, Spain, for the 2013 Port Adriano SUP Race.
This event is organized by a very active crew of SUP Racers in Mallorca, among them the Spanish SUP Race Champs 2012. They are used to race and they know what the riders want. So despite being the 1st edition of this event we know that we are going to have fun.

Greg Closier claimed the victory in a cold but sunny weather, leading home young gun Arthur Daniel and Yoann Cornelis by a very slim margin. The top three were clearly in a tight race of their own; only 16 seconds separated them after almost an hour of paddling, but then it was a further four minutes back to the next finisher.

Cécile Gondre won the women division.

April 20-21st 2013: Jade Paddle Race, France: Long Distance Elite 12’6 (star rating TBC)

The star rating for this event has not been confirmed yet, but it’s aiming to be a 3- Stars Long Distance Elite 12’6 race.

When we think about this race we remember the perfect downwinder we enjoyed last year. The Jade Paddle race takes place on the Atlantic coast of France near Nantes (the hometown of Eric Terrien).

The event program includes a Beach Race and a Long Distance race (EuroSUPA sanctioned). The course for the Long Distance race (min. 10km) will be selected the day before, depending to the wind forecast. This region offers many possible downwind courses in almost all the wind directions, so the race will be take advantage of any weather situation.

April 26-28th 2013: Port Adriano SUP Race, Spain: Long Distance Elite 12’6 (4-star)

This is a new event that we are looking forward to. There are a lot of Elite SUP Racers in the Balearic islands, with the location of this race being home to 2012 Spanish Champions Laura Quetglas and Manuel Simoncelli.

The event program includes the 4-star Elite 12’6 Long Distance Race as well as sprint races, tandem races and a lot more surprises.

May 18-19th 2013: Battle of the Coast, Holland: Beach Race (1-star)

The Battle of the Coast is a classic Dutch event that has been EuroSUPA sanctioned since 2011. If you live in this region or if you just want to spend a great weekend in Holland, this is an event not to be missed!

May 18-19th 2013: North Point SUP Classic, France: Beach Race (1-star)

The North Point SUP Classic has been running since 2009. From ‘09 – ‘10 the event was held in Greg Closier’s hometown and featured a Beach Race as well as a SUP Surf contest. In 2011 the event moved to a new location, Crozon, in search of better waves. There’s usually a few big names showing up to this event.

May 25-26th 2013: SUP Race CUP, France: Beach Race (stars TBC), Long Distance Elite 12’6 (stars TBC)

This race has played a key role in the history of SUP Racing in Europe since 2010.
We are still waiting for final confirmation regarding star rating and prize money, but we already know that it will be a huge event featuring what is arguably the biggest Beach Race in Europe, as well as a Long Distance race in the Gulf of Saint Tropez.

We spoke with Yannick Pinaud (the organiser) just yesterday and apparently there will be a big surprise this year for the Distance Race, making the event even more exciting.

May 27th-June 2nd 2013: Lost Mills International Race, Germany: Long Distance Elite 14′ (6-star)

If you are a SUP Racer then this is one event you can’t miss. The Lost Mills race is where everyone will go right after the SUP Race Cup and features plenty of races, demos and a SUP expo. The main event will be the 6-star, Elite 14’ Long Distance race on Saturday 1st June. So start training now if you want to be ready!

June 7-8-9th 2013: Bikingo Eguna, Spain (TBC)

This event will definitely happen, but we are still in the process of having sanctioned as a EuroSUPA event. But either way, we’ve seen the project and we know the organiser, so we can safely say that you will have a lot of fun if you decide to go.

It will take place near Bilbao and features plenty of activities such as SUP races, SUP surfing, longboard skating, slackline and more. We’ll let you know all the important info as soon as we have more details.

June 15-16 2013: III DEEP SUP Race, Villa De Noja, Spain: Beach Race (2-star) and Long Distance Elite 12’6 race (2-star)

Now in its third year, this race will be sanctioned as a EuroSUPA race for the 1st time in 2013. There is a very active team behind the scenes trying to organise a great event, so we don’t just sanction it, we highly recommend it!

June 22nd 2013: Happy Summer Namur International SUP Race, Belgium: Long Distance Elite 14′ (5-star)

This is another of the events that must be on your schedule if you are serious about SUP racing. Belgium’s premiere SUP event takes place in the wonderful city of Namur. It’s not only a race that goes a long way towards deciding the annual EuroSUPA Long Distance rankings, it’s also a huge party.

Blob jumps, slacklines, OC4, music, etc. Even though last year was the first edition of this event, it still attracted most of Europe’s top paddlers. In 2013 we expect it to be even bigger.

July 26-27-28th 2013: Italia Surf Expo, Italy: Beach Race (stars TBC)

This is a classic Italian race that is held during the Italian surf Expo. In 2012 there were some small waves for the 3-star race, which made it even more exciting.

August 25th 2013: Howzit Summer Beach Race, France: Beach Race (1-star)

Another event in the Swell Beach race Series that will be sanctioned by EuroSUPA. This race will take place in Landunvez, which is a pretty cool spot to compete, or even to just watch the action.

August 31st – September 1st 2013: 1st Wolder SUP-RACE AYTO. De Suances, Spain: Long Distance Elite 12’6 (1-star) and Beach Race (2-star)

September 3rd – 8th 2013: SUP 11 City Tour, Holland: EuroSUPA Special Event

We are very proud to announce that the SUP 11 City Tour is entering the EuroSUPA Calendar in 2013 as a EuroSUPA Special Event.

During this five-day SUP race, founded by Anne Marie Reichman, participants paddle along the same waterways that ice skaters conquered in the original “11 City Tour” that dates back to 1909.

This event has been successful since it began in 2009 and has already attracted many elite international paddlers. If you like very long distances and personal challenges, this race is for you.

(Note : The results of a Special Event do not count in the annual rankings)

Only minor changes from 2012, we have tried to simplify and clarify a few points.
Some of the changes are the “Special events category” aimed at promoting a few selected events which have proved their exceptional interest even if they can not enter in other general categories. These events will not be taken into consideration in the annual ranking.
Another change is that there will not be Under16yo categories in 2013. We like to see how the number of young riders is growing and we are impressed to see how fast the kids are improving. We will keep an eye on the performances of the young guns (we require the organizers to register the age of the participants) and the organizers are free to give awards to the top youngest riders (as well as to the Kahunas) but this will not be an official category this year.

As for the calendar, all events are not confirmed yet, some dates and stars can change but here is a 1st list of events. We recommend to often check this website for updates.

Sunday, 23rd of September 2012, the State Nature Reserve of Maccarese, along the Roman coast, hosted the Second Edition of Rome Event One, an event dedicated both to water and street board sports. For the second consecutive year, the coast have been made colorful by the invasion of Stand Up Paddle, surf, windsurf and kitesurf fans 2013 new equipment.
As in any other major event, all the most famous brands in the industry as well as athletes practicing the various sports involved, did not miss the appointment.
The Stand Up Paddle has captured the attention of a wide audience literally stuck on the beach to enjoy the athletes performances, the equipment free trials and the sheer atmosphere of the show.
The event attracted athletes and enthusiasts from all over Italy since the 2012 edition witnessed the long-awaited Eurosupa race, one of the most anticipated events of the year, where only the top Italian riders gathered for the umpteenth challenge. The race, valid for the EuroSUPA annual rankings and sponsored by Quicksilver, has earned a prominent place in the national and international open water events calendar.
The race course was assembled in record time from the earliest hours of the morning with 3 buoys placed about 30 meters from the shore and 3 buoys placed offshore, to draw the 3.5 km coil circuit. Two operators have dealt with secretarial services and registration of athletes. During the skippers meeting Giuseppe Cuscianna, race director of the event, gave details about of the race circuit and rules to be respected. 34 participating athletes, including some belonging to the All-Round category who had to complete one lap of the circuit whilst the athletes belonging to the Race category had to double the circuit for a total of 7 Km.
For its whole length the race had been checked by a panel of experts: high judge Nico Radek Montenegro and in second judge Paola Perrone from the shore, whilst two jet skis checked the correct execution of the competition offshore, keeping an eye especially at buoys turnaround.
The race was exciting right from the beach start which forced 3 athletes to withdrawal after having crashed one into each other during the entrance into the water. Leonard Nika has dominated the entire competition leading over his opponents since the first few meters gaining so undisputed the highest position on the podium. Fabrizio Gasbarro placed second leaving Giordano Bruno Capparella only 4 seconds behind.
The race dyed pink with women proof who saw undisputed winner Silvia Mecucci followed by Cecilia Pescatori and Roberta Mariani. The the All Round class podium was gained instead by Alexander Tabah, Turturro Antonio and Giacomo De Simone respectively first, second and third.
The Quiksilver Race met everyone expectations. Athletes took home 2000€ cash prizes, the public has witnessed a spectacular event, amateurs could touch avant-garde equipment, the fans could share the emotion of the event and the organizers managed to give place to an international event that has nothing to envy to the most important competitions.
